Remember these cinematic masterpieces?

That man is Baz Lurhmann. He is one of the most artful directors of our time, and in May, he’s bringing The Great Gatsby to the big screen.

Knowing his style and take on these beautiful tragedies, it’s sure to be like no other version you’ve seen (or read, for that matter).

Lurhmann’s films are colorful and FULL–full of detail, splendor, and creative liberty. He has a particular interest in rich, saturated colors, and he clearly loves contrast. I feel like I’m watching the movie version of a Georgia O’Keeffe painting with his work sometimes. It’s typically glorious and dark, all at the same time.

He also handles music in a unique way. He likes to take modern music and make it appropriate for the time period being portrayed, which  usually makes for an exciting, moving, and dramatic combination.

“Why should I be excited about this movie?”, you say?

Because not only does it combine one of the greatest classics of twentieth-century literature with one of the most creative directors of the twenty-first century, it also features, arguably, the most talented actor of our generation as the Great Gatsby.
