It’s here. It’s all going down. And it’s not going to be pretty.
The series finale of Breaking Bad is upon us, and it’s sure to be one of the most watched series finales…probably ever.
I became a Breaking Bad addict (pun intended) late in the game. I think I’ve watched all five seasons within the last year or so. It has not disappointed. I can see why it’s been called one of the greatest dramas of all time.
This show is not for everyone. It’s dark, psychologically heavy, and true to the violent drug world. But it’s brilliant, all at the same time. The writing is superb, and the acting–outstanding.
What do I like about it most? It doesn’t glamorize, well, really anything. Even in the meek moments of happiness and calm (which are few and far between), the consequences of Walter White’s actions follow him to the bitter end and never let up. It’s the story of “Mr. Chips turns Scarface”. It’s the story of our depraved human nature–how we’re capable of the most horrific things, given the right circumstances and the right amount of lies (and no Light).
Walt makes one bad decision after another until eventually, he’s unrecognizable–even to himself.
It’s all for my family…he believes this lie over and over again. It justifies his actions because he can’t stand the alternative. Loss of pride. Loss of importance. Loss of an “empire.”
The juxtaposition of Walt to Jesse is one of the show’s strong points. Though Jesse lives in the middle of the madness, he is the moral compass of the show. He’s the heart, he’s the compassion. He tries to live a life that he’s not cut out for. He wants to do the right thing. He wants the hurting to stop. But it doesn’t. They are in too deep.
If you watch any form of media or have friends that watch any form of media, you probably have a decent idea of at least the premise of the show, so I won’t bore you with endless details. If you have no idea what I’m talking about…well, just watch it, would you?
There are hundreds of articles out there right now on Breaking Bad…I will not hypothesize or even discuss the last few episodes. Plenty of people have done that (although I’ll ask you to shortly).
And frankly, I can’t even talk about Hank. I’m still too torn up about it. You break my heart, Breaking Bad. You break. My. Heart.
I will, however, point you to one of the best articles I’ve found on the subject thus far by Time magazine>>> The Iceman Cometh. Wow. If you’re a fan, read it.
I will also include a couple of clips for you. The first is one from one of my favorite episodes, “Gliding Over All.” You’ll get a glimpse of the process and how everything was “good”…right before the fall. I particualarly like the art direction of this entire clip (and the song choice, of course). Very nicely done.
The last clip–a one minute overview of the show up to this point (includes another fine song choice, by the way).

I hope you’re watching AMC Sunday night. I don’t think it will disappoint.
What a journey it has been, Mr. White. What a journey it has been.
