It’s here, folks!
The new Tonight Show is finally here.
I was heartbroken when Conan had to leave a few years back,
but Jay’s time finally came (again),
and Jimmy couldn’t be a better fit.
Not only is he hilariously funny,
but he’s insanely “show business” smart .
And, he’s just one of the most
likeable people in the biz.
We grew up watching SNL with Jimmy
when he couldn’t get through a scene without laughing.
I knew then that I liked him.
Then, we fell in love with “Late Night,”
and saw just how well he could run a show.
Then I got tickets to Late Night, and he actually touched my hand.
That was pretty cool.
So, did you watch the inaugural episode last night?
It was good.
It was very good, in fact.
Spike Lee created the new opening title sequence,
and it’s perfection.
It’s also very New York.
Speaking of which, Jimmy did a great job of celebrating the city;
there is grandeur surrounding the fact that it’s back in the Big Apple
for the first time in 40 years.
From the opening film to
the wood carvings of the city behind Jimmy’s desk,
the show is dripping in that glorious NYC vibe.
Even the set decor is representative
of NBC studios and its mid-century mod flair.
U2 played on Top of the Rock, and there couldn’t have
been a better backdrop.
The city truly was Jimmy’s best guest.
U2 was pretty darn good, too.
I particularly loved the end segment when he chatted with the band
and they played “Ordinary Love” in a more casual setting.
Of course by the end, Bono and the band had everyone on their feet.
Kudos also goes out to The Roots and Questlove.
I heard Questlove interviewed on Fresh Air last year,
and he was discussing the process for coming up with the new theme song.
I knew that it would be good after hearing that interview,
and, of course, it didn’t disappoint.
It’s better than you might have even imagined.
When you hear it you think,
“That’s it! That’s the theme song!”
I’m looking forward to watching Jimmy settle in as new host of “The Tonight Show.”
He was clearly emotional the first few minutes of the show,
and who wouldn’t be?
He just snagged the best job in late night.
Congrats, Jimmy Fallon!
